CURATED CURIOSITIES

šŸ’š Full transparency here. Iā€™M NOT GOING TO SPRING TRAINING TO SEE THE NEW SEMI-SHEER UNIFORMS šŸ¤ lol (humor words, that was last week)

BUT, I love Spring Training! The fans own it. Diehards come from the north and spend their spring breaks saluting their heroes. Itā€™s easy to get star autographs. Stats-keeping is its own sort of competitive sport in the stands. The volunteers at our ballparks (Cacti Park, Roger Dean Stadium, & Clover Park) are the some of the kindest humans youā€™ll ever meet. Plus you may catch one of my first pitches!

šŸ˜µ YET CENTERFIELD HOLDS A CURIOUS MEMORY FROM MY SHORT STINT AT SOFTBALL. MY DAYDREAMING SKILLS DIDNā€™T SERVE ME HERE. MY OVERCOMPENSATION REACTIONS DIDNā€™T EITHER. THE SOFTBALL SOARED STRAIGHT INTO MY LEFT EYE, GIVING ME THE PRIVILEGE OF STARTING 7TH GRADE WITH THE SHINER GOTH/EMO VIBE. I just called it ā€œthe eye of the tiger.ā€ Would you believe I made all-stars? I basically only hit infield grounders or bunts. Yikes! BUT, I sprinted the bases like the Usain Bolt of the softball world. I was the ā€œDESIGNATED HIT RUNNER.ā€ Iā€™d steal bases like a maniac šŸ˜…

I learned a valuable lesson that I think will serve you well. When you focus on your unique strengths, even if theyā€™re not predictable or mainstream, you elevate those around you. Iā€™m convinced it has to do with how God has designed you. If I kept striking swings against the wall trying to be a slugger versus a runner, no bueno! By focusing on what had the most design for, I mastered a unique weapon for the team. Granted, I also learned softball wasnā€™t my forte overall. šŸ˜¶ā€šŸŒ«ļø  It did give me great strategy on tackling life with originality!

šŸ’« So thereā€™s foot speed and then thereā€™s jet suit speed. Today does this work in space? Are alien plants a thing? The Habitable Worlds Observatory is a project that kicked out with collaborations with scientists in the last few months. Itā€™s a space telescope in development that could take the first direct images of exoplanets. HabEx, among other things, could show possible plant life that may actually look red in space. If extraterrestrial photosynthesis is a thing, alien plants would show chlorophyll as a red-edge.

STUNNING RED is the color of an orchid found on an extinct volcano in Indonesia last year. Itā€™s one of 74 new plants and fungi noted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 2023. Kew named everything from an underground ā€œforestā€, to a violet-like flower growing in Thailand, to fungi growing on waste in South Korea. Giving scientific names to species is the first step to putting protections in place and explores new uses for humanity. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-67930823

šŸ’— Soon delivery drivers are going to be scrambling to deliver flowers for Valentineā€™s Day. But one New Orleans UPS driver stops to ā€œsmell the flowersā€ in a different way. He takes selfies with all the dogs he runs into! He started posting the feel-good pictures and now heā€™s gone viral. Jason Hardesty says heā€™s never had an issue with any of the dogs heā€™s snapped shots with. He says that it doesnā€™t matter the breed, ā€œat the end of the day we all just want to be loved and adored.ā€
