Wild Words

Horses, Satellites, & Tidiness

CURATED CURIOSITIES

The thing I can’t get over is how unbothered the wild horse remained, even as I inched closer and closer. The shaggy-tressed blonde simply kept eating the beach grass. She felt completely at home on the dunes of Assateague Island, Maryland.

“My Wild Horse Friend”

Legend has it that the horses escaped from a Spanish Galleon shipwreck sometime around 1750. Ever since, the survivors have made the barrier island their own wild horse enclave. I did a story, (in the day), on the annual wild horse swim across the channel. There’s a herd on the Maryland side and another on the Virginia side. It turns out a few North Carolina horses have their own mystery!

These beach horses are the ultimate example of “rewilding.” That’s basically an ecological movement that aims lure missing animals, along with flora and fauna, back to the landscape. “REWILDING” is also the number one gardening trend this year. Gardeners basically let nature do its thing instead of trying to control it.

“Natural”

The natural from Earth will soon make it to Space. Japan will launch the world’s first wooden satellite in September. It’s called the LignoSat. The satellite is made of Magnolia wood, noted for strength and workablity. The satellite was crafted with an old-school Japanese technique that doesn’t use screws or glue. Traditional satellites deposit metal particles into the atmosphere. The wood will offer an alternative if it works. Researchers say they also want to build human habitats from wood in space.

“Satellite Material”

I’m definitely a fan of resourcing the wild for new exploration. You just won’t ever find me in the Everglades. I don’t think Shrek lives there. I know the pythons and gators do. I honor the entropy of nature, yet find myself craving the meticulous.

CLEANLINESS IS ORDER.”

In Japanese schools, the task of cleaning is primarily the responsibility of students. It’s a concept called Gakko Soji. Students clean classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms. It’s all about respect for mutual spaces.

Shared responsibility elevates the value of the whole. Environments communicate without language. What do you bring to the context? The essence of a space is dynamic from the very moment you observe it.

YOU are the environmental WILDCARD! Humans have the capacity to animate spaces with creative harmony or destructive dissonance. How are you communing? Are you open to possibilities still unrealized in the world?

The prophet Zechariah saw a vision of horse-drawn chariots between two bronze mountains. “The angel answered me, These are the four spirits of heaven, going out from standing in the presence of the Lord of the whole world.”

And what a world it is! Thank you for a receptive environment for these words. Let’s tend to our spaces with reverence and care 💜
