RNA Words

Hippos, Pitches, & Colors

She’s known for her scream and blushed cheeks. He’s known for his weight and his waddle. They are both viral social media hits, showing up in memes ranging from Alabama football to the Great British Bakeoff.

Moo Deng, the baby pygmy hippo from Thailand has a bite! Pesto, the 46 pound penguin chick from Melbourne, has a side-eye. Can you tell I’m obsessed?

Adorbs squared!

Who is the cutest?

Pesto, the 46 lb. penguin chick, or Moo Deng, the baby pygmy hippo?

How are these two so unique? Perhaps it’s in their RNA? No, not DNA, RNA. It’s a single strand molecular marvel that acts like a quick text message to cells. Cellular bubbles communicate with each other, even across species! Scientists have recently proven that RNA transcends the boundaries of species, carrying a common biological language. Is that why we’re so enthralled with baby hippos and penguins?

RNA may be a universal molecular communication system. But empathy is most certainly a cross-species emotional communication system. Marley, who just won a National Cat of the Year Award, is a perfect example. The seven year old cat lives at a London Safe House for women who have been enslaved and trafficked. The house manager says Marley will sit close to the women at first. Then, if they are comfortable, he will gently place his paw on their leg. Before the Safe House adopted him, Marley lived in a home where another cat bullied him. Perhaps he intuitively understands! The women seem to think so!

Is the Grimace a kind of fast-food messenger of hope for the Mets? The club went on a 7-game winning streak after his awkward first pitch! Now the Grimace has his own “Purple” seat in honor of his “special connection to Mets fans.” There’s a mystique surrounding the Grimace/Mets phenomenon!

I believe serendipity finds those who fully engage with the recurring wonders they encounter. I’m the kind of person who chases butterflies (much to the chagrin of my daughter ;-) What can I say? The colors mesmerize.

Crystal scales, that form the wings, reflect light to show the colors. Scientists say that the lattices where the crystals meet create the sparkle. The arrangement is highly organized but with irregularities in orientation.

Basically, there are defects in the pattern. But, it’s THE DEFECTS AND ANOMALIES that increase the light-scattering properties. THE WINGS APPEAR BRIGHTER! Plus, RNA controls all the black on the wings—emboldening the pattern.

“Vibrant Message”

In nature (with butterflies) the RNA message enhances the color. So, question is, what message are we ingesting and materializing? We only have marginal control of our biology. But, with our mentality and heart? It’s a choice. Jesus says, “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.”(MSG)

We all have defects. Yet grace, allows us to blend a beautiful pattern as we interact with the world around us. And, the cool thing is, it’s the growth from the defect that bursts out with color. Let’s grow forward this week! 🤍 💙 🧡 🖤
