LIVELY WORDS

Notebooks, Stowaways, & Honey

CURATED CURIOSITIES

The 6-foot tall man looked like a member of the Miami heat in street clothes in a full-court hustle. In his right hand he carried not a basketball, but a notebook. He wasn’t driving for a goal at the Kaseya Center, but rather an elderly man crossing the street. The scene grabbed our attention like a movie. The older gentleman had forgotten his notebook from Walgreens. The younger man sprinted urgently to get it to him. It stood out as a simple, unselfish act of empathy. You could tell the notebook runner had a heart because of the passion with which he pursued. He infused life and value with his actions.

“Noted by a Stranger’s Kindness”

I’ve found that positive surprises captivate our attention. The unexpected good carries life! It’s like lifting the lid on hidden joy. Just ask Carrie Clark. She unwittingly mailed an Amazon return with a bit of extra cargo. A conscientious Amazon worker got quite the wakeup when the bright eyes of Galeana the cat greeted him! Galeana’s love of boxes took her more than a thousand miles away from Carrie. The two reunited this week 😄

“Returned and Reunited!”

There’s something about pets. They can calm us and cheer us up. They love no matter what. Years ago I volunteered at Duke Childrens’ Hospital. Pet therapy always brought smiles despite circumstances. It’s difficult to be anxious when you’re holding a puppy.

“Smile”

Animals are also being used in the search for alien life. A research team called “Whale-SETI” just posted about conversing with a humpback whale named Twain. The fathoms of this milestone have implications for the depths and the stars. Researchers says it’s a compelling case for interspecies communication. Twain responded to 36 calls as she swam near the research vessel in Alaska’s Frederick Sound. Scientists believe practicing interspecies communication with animals will help with recognizing signals from other non human intelligence in the universe.

Communication is a lifeline. Like life, it progresses with increasing complexity and diversity. Yet, at its essence, it connects. Words hold life or death. Proverbs says: “Gracious speech is like clover honey—good taste to the soul, quick energy for the body.” We need stored carbohydrate energy to live!

LOVE IS THE UNIVERSAL TRANSLATION.”

Sandra Shaw

Love is it’s own kind of energy. Especially collectively. My daughter recently found a huge honeycomb. It inspired thoughts of the beauty of communal energy. All the bees are united in a common mission to gather nectar and produce honey.

It relates to a recent study on super-agers. These people are 80 and up. Instead of losing memory as they age, they maintain it. Their memory capacity is that of those 30 or more years younger. The cause remains a mystery. But researchers did discover one common link. They all had strong social relationships and were active in community.

I love this because it circles back to the lively encounter with the older gentleman, his lost notebook, and the selfless guy who returned it. I’m convinced humans encourage more life when they encourage each other! Jesus ate broiled fish and honeycomb when he appeared to the 11 after resurrecting. (Luke 24:42-45)

There is such wonder in the world around us. Basic physics maintains that even by observing an environment you change it. So let’s see the “more” that’s all around us!

A LIVELY week awaits! 💚
