CURATED CURIOSITIES

🤪 “We love to let down our guard in the north and come down here to FLING FISH!”

That’s what a snowbird told me at the annual Flora/Bama Interstate Mullet Toss. Before you get confused, it’s not that ancient Billy Ray Cyrus hair thing. It’s a silvery fish that often jumps like a bean out of the Gulf. The Mullet Toss is a ginormous party on the panhandle where people hurl mullet from Florida into Alabama! (The mullet have already passed into another realm.) So I considered my throw (way back when) symbolic. It’s a smelly, humbling, yet exhilarating fish tale experience that thousands will partake in next month. Proceeds from each mullet go to various childrens’ charities.

One of the first things I learned related to actual fishing came from my cousin Lynley. She said to always hold the fish right in front of your body because it looks bigger! She, my Aunt Sandra and Uncle Ed are incredible at fishing. I’ve been lucky to go with them over the years and also a few fishing guides.

Still, fishing is a mercurial sport at best. I like how writer Jason Gay puts it. “It is heartbreak and tedium, punctuated by occasional thrills, but the score doesn’t matter because the fish are always out there.” https://www.amazon.com/Wouldnt-Do-That-If-Were/dp/0306828561

HUMILITY SEES POTENTIAL THROUGH A FLEXIBLE NET.”

Sandra Shaw

You just never know. Scientists in Berlin had quite a noise mystery on their hands. They kept hearing a constant, loud buzz from the fish tanks in their lab. It turns out the drum blasting, drill-like clatter was actually coming from the very tiny fish in the tanks. How tiny? 12 mm. How loud? 140 decibels (as loud as a shot gun)! They discovered that the Danionella Cerebrum, even though miniscule, is one of the noisiest fish in the sea. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68402386

The true measure of a fish runs beneath its surface. Like humans. Humility keeps us questioning and open to possibilities. It keeps us from judgement and self reliance. Humility catches wisdom. It considers dynamics beyond its control. It allows room for the the process, yet it still dreams of glory. What are you fishing for? The depths of your essence can be intimidating and quirky. Like fish. Yet your sea of potential isn’t going anywhere. It’s no wonder Jesus chose fishermen as His disciples! Fish with faith and there’s no telling what you might catch!
