All I saw was a yellow jersey flying by. My legs thumped the bluegrass with guts, but the glory all went to a younger nemesis—my brother Tebe!
Today’s his Birthday. But that day was my junior year in high school and his 7th grade year in middle school. The cross country race featured the varsity girls versus the JV boys. I had it! Ummmm….until the very last 50 yards. Tebe “Usain Bolted” by me (state champion, no matter). Intangibles. When I think of Tebe, I think of a bulldog.

Winston Churchill channeled the vibe. The bulldog emerged as a symbol of his British determination during WWII.

I used to encounter the most adorable baby bulldog on my running route along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. His name was Clancy (after the awesome writer Tom Clancy of the Jack Ryan novels). By the way, Amazon’s working on a new Jack Ryan movie!
But, back to Baltimore, the Orioles are missing a bit of that “bulldog” energy this year. They are 15-24. Yikes! There’s now a huge debate circling among diehard O’s fans about predictive AI. That’s because the Orioles’ management heavily relied on AI simulations and stats to guide their drafting and strategy.
Hmmmmm…..Ever heard of Tom Brady? Yeah, he was drafted #199 in the NFL. I’m convinced that “intangible” human drive and passion uniquely presents in sports.

Numbers aren’t a bad thing. I just believe that the “Prime Mover”, God, placed something special in the human soul. It transcends algorithms.

The scriptures describe David as a runt. 1 Samuel 16:7 reads in part, “The Lord does not look at the things that people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
